active proximity cards
Proximity cards are contactless access cards that store both a facility code and card number in its memory. Proximity cards can be either active or passive. Active cards have a built-in battery to power the card and thus gives the card a much higher read range. Active cards can achieve read ranges in the tens of feet. Passive cards use the power from the proximity reader to connect to the proximity reader. Passive cards can reach read ranges up to about 3 feet.
