Direct drive barrier gate operators employ a drive train design that allows the electric motor to be directly connected to the barrier gate arm assembly. The gear box that non-direct drive
automatic gates usually employ is no longer needed in a direct drive electric gate opener. This type of design allows the gate operator to be rid of any belts, pulleys, limit switches, and frictional
clutches. This means maintenance-free operation and high reliablility for a longer lifetime.
The intended use of automatic gate operators is to control vehiclular access and exits to parking lots. The WPT-MBE-50-C100 is a reliable, maintenance-free direct drive barrier gate
operator that uses a single phase torque motor with lever system. The traffic gate is easily setup using a rotary knob and (2) push buttons via a microcontroller based controller unit. The WPT-MBE-50-C100
accomodates gate arms up to a length of 15' and supports opening times of 4.6 seconds and closing times of 4.9 seconds. These direct drive arm barriers are ideal for applications in hospital, university,
business park, and airport parking lots or parking garages.
The Housing
The WPT-MBE-50-C100 uses a sturdy, compact, and attractive steel housing that measures 41"H by 14"D by 12"W. The housing is coated with a UV-resistant and environmentally friendly powder
coat to ensure corrosion protection from extreme weather conditions. The housing comes in a standard RAL 9010 white color. Other RAL colors can be special ordered at an additional cost. The housing includes
a hinged mounting plate where the controller and power switch are located. To make maintenance an installation easy, the WPT-MBE-50-C100 has a front maintenance door and removable top cover to access all
components within the gate operator. Installation of the housing to the concrete pad is made easy with (2) heavy duty hold down beams with large mounting slots. This rids the installation of drilling precise
hole patterns in the concrete slab.
WPT-MBE-50-C100 Gate Arm Compatibility
The WPT-MBE-50-C100 gate arms (booms) are constructed from 1/16" extruded aluminum alloy with cross section dimensions of 4" by 2 1/16". The gate arms are coated with a RAL 9010 white
color and then red reflective safety tape applied. The gate arms are light reflective and are easily seen at night. If the gate arm length required is to be more than 14', a pendulum support or fixed post

Arms. For height restricted applications such as low clearance parking garages, an articulated (folding) gate arm is recommended. Please provide Westco the length of the folding arm and the height
restrictions when ordering.

The WPT-MBE-50-C100 Drive Train
The drive train unit consists of a maintenance-free, single phase, AC torque motor and the unique lever drive system which rids the drive of any belts, pulleys, or frictional clutches. The
gate operator arm is counter-balanced by springs which are precisely adjusted depending on the gate arm length. It is possible to configure the drive train to support either a left-hand or right-hand boom
installation. Once the gate arm is either in the full open or completely closed positions, the gate arm is locked. When power failure occurs, the gate opener can either be set to automatically open or easily
be opened manually.
The WPT-MBE-50-C100 Electronic Controller
The WPT-MBE-50-C100 has 11 standard operating modes to use to configure various lane configurations. The selection of the operating mode is done via a rotary switch and DIP switches. The
AC torque motor is driven by a triac output stage. All signal inputs and relay outputs are opto-coupled. The controller also provides a 24VDC, 0.5Amp power terminal to drive external electrical devices such
as vehicle loop detectors. All inputs and outputs are connected to LED's for troubleshooting and diagnostics of the gate operator.
Installing A Direct Drive Barrier Gate Operator
The installation of a barrier gate operator requires a concrete foundation and electrical connections for both power and communications.
A lane diagram or layout should first be designed to represent the customer's goals for the application area. If vehicle loops are to be used, proper layout of the loop needs to be
considered in the lane diagram. See Westco's HelpCenter for more information on constructing vehicle loops and layout diagrams. Westco

Electrical connections for barrier gate operators must also be considered as part of the lane diagram. Typically 120VAC power and communication connections for vehicle loops, card readers,
proximity readers, and push buttons are required.
Opening and Closing Devices to Connect to a WPT-MBE-50-C100
All gate operators require an opening device and closing device to operate properly. If no opening devices are used, the gate operator will not open or close. Therefore, thought must be
taken to what device will open the gate operator and what device will close the gate operator.

few of the opening devices used for opening a barrier gate operator.

What are the Differences Between the WPT-MBE-35-C100 and the WPT-MBE-50-C100?
The main differences between the WPT-MBE-35-C100 and WPT-MBE-50-C100 barrier gate operators are gate arm length support and opening and closing times. The MBE-35-C100 will support up to
12' gate arm lengths while providing 2.3 second / 2.8 second opening and closing times. The WPT-MBE-50-C100 supports gate arm lengths up to 15' (pendulum supports or fixed post supports are required for
longer than 14' arm lengths) while providing 4.6 second / 4.9 second opening and closing times. Therefore, the WPT-MBE-50-C100 takes about twice as long to open and close compared to the
WPT-MBE-35-C100.
