Description:
The WPT-MTS-8-920 Direct Drive Barrier Gate Operator is a good fit for wide driveways that require a long boom. An example application is a manned checkpoint for large truck deliveries. The
WPT-MTS-8-920 is a direct drive automatic gate operator that supports up to a 33' gate arms with opening/closing times at approximately 8.5 seconds. This electric gate uses a patented torque motor and unique
lever drive system. The WPT-MTS-8-920 employs a high strength housing which is both weather-resistant and easy to maintain. The electronic controller is micrcontrooler based and allows for a vast number of
external peripherals to be connected.
What is a Direct Drive Barrier Gate Operator?
A direct drive automatic barrier gate opener uses a design that allows the electric motor to be directly connected to the barrier boom (gate arm) assembly. This direct connection (thus the
term direct drive) allows the traffic gate to eliminate components such as belts, pulleys, frictional clutches, and limit switches which all require maintenance over time. Therefore, direct drive barrier gate operator is maintenance-free and more reliable over a longer period of time.
The WPT-MTS-8-920 Housing
The WPT-MTS-8-920 housing measures 43"H by 14.5"D by 18.5"W and is trypically mounted on a concrete slab with power and communication conduits stubbed up from the slab. The WPT-MTS-8-920
housing is built from steel sheets that are galvanised and phosphate-treated. These traits provides both high strength and corrosion protection. Installation and maintenance is easy with a removable hood and
front door. The housing is painted a standard RAL 2000 color. Other colors are available for special order.
WPT-MTS-8-920 Gate Arms
The WPT-MTS-8-920 booms are constructed from 1/10" thick special aluminum alloy with cross section dimensions of 5" by 3 1/2". The WPT-MTS-8-920 supports gate arms up to 33'. Note: Booms
that are over 27' require (2) supports. The gate arms are finished with a RAL 9010 white color and then red reflective safety tape applied. The gate arms are easily seen at night.
The WPT-MTS-8-920 Drive Train
At the heart of the WPT-MTS-8-920 is a 115VAC blockable torque motor. When the boom is in the fully opened or closed positions, the boom is locked into position due to the unique lever
system. The design of the motor and lever system allow for a maintenance-free electric gate due to the absence of limit swithes, pulleys, and clutches. The drive train can be setup either for left-handed or
right-handed operation. Counter-balanced springs balance the boom weight.
Installation
The installation of a barrier gate operator requires a concrete foundation and electrical connections for both power and communications.
A lane diagram or layout should first be designed to represent the customer's goals for the application area. If vehicle loops are to be used, proper layout of the loop needs to be
considered in the lane diagram. See Westco's HelpCenter for more information on constructing vehicle loops and layout diagrams. Westco
can also assist customers with the design of barrier gate operator systems.
Electrical connections for barrier gate operators must also be considered as part of the lane diagram. Typically 120VAC power and communication connections for vehicle loops, card readers,
proximity readers, and push buttons are required.
Compatible Opening and Closing Devices
All gate operators require an opening device and closing device to operate properly. If no opening devices are used, the gate operator will not open or close. Therefore, thought must be
taken to what device will open the gate operator and what device will close the gate operator.
Card Readers,
Proximity Readers,
Keypads,
Vehicle Loops, and Radio Receivers are among a
few of the opening devices used for opening a barrier gate operator.
Vehicle Loops, Radio Receivers,
and Push Buttons are a few of the closing devices used for the closing of a barrier gate operator. For an automatic closing of a gate
operator, a vehicle loop should be used.

What are the Differences Between the WPT-MTS-6-920 and the WPT-MTS-8-920?
The differences between the WPT-MTS-6-920 and WPT-MTS-8-920 direct drive barrier gate are in the supported boom lengths and the opening and closing time of the gate operator. The WPT-MTS-6-920 supports up to a 26'
gate arm length while the WPT-MTS-8-920 supports up to a 33' gate arm length. The WPT-MTS-6-920 opening and closing times are about 6.5 seconds while the WPT-MTS-8-920 opening and closing times are about 8.5
seconds.
What peripherals can be connected to the WPT-MTS-8-920 Direct Drive Barrier Gate?
The WPT-Mts-6-920 employs a microcontroller based control unit. This controller allows the gate opener to be very versatile. Connecting keypads, card readers, proximity readers, vehicle
loop detectors, push buttons, and timers are simple and require little time. If you have any peripheral device that you wish to connect to the WPT-MBE-35-C100 and are unsure of compatibility, feel free to
